DCU Steam Review & Upgrade

client: Dublin City University
Project Status: Completed November 2018
Location: Glasnevin Campus

The project involved a detailed review and report on a steam system in Building X on the Glasnevin Campus for DCU. The main issues that required addressing were water ingress in the space from duct-mounted humidifiers and significant concerns regarding the state of repair of the steam system.

Synergy Engineering undertook a review of the complete system. After investigation, it was found that the humidifier selection and installation were as per the manufacturer's specifications. An in-depth review of the steam system found carry-over of steam into the condensate system due to failed trap. The chemical dosing was unsuitable for this application and significant corrosion was present.

Synergy Engineering designed a programme to improve the operation of the system by replacement and upgrade of essential items; these include:

  1. Short-term infrastructure to reduce the water leaking into the space

  2. Cleaning of strainers

  3. Steam trap survey and replacement

  4. Correct steam trap installation

  5. New chemical dosing system

  6. Replacement of isolation valves with the appropriate type for a steam & condensate system

  7. Cleaning of the humidifiers

  8. Replacement of humidifier control valve bodies

  9. Minimising shutdown works to the system

Synergy Engineering project managed the works with the contractors and specialists to ensure the works took place with limited disruption to the client operations.
